Same process, different environment. Honed concrete stops short of a gloss finish, which is exactly what an outdoor surface needs — a matte, textured surface keeps its grip in the wet, where a polished floor becomes a hazard the moment it rains.

It also handles what indoor floors never face. UV, frost, thermal movement, vehicle traffic and pool chemicals all attack a surface differently, so the sealer and the exposure level get specified for outdoor conditions rather than borrowed from an interior spec.

For interior floors — warehouses, offices, retail, showrooms — that's polished concrete.

Choosing your aggregate exposure

How deep we grind decides how much stone comes up. Indoors that's purely a look. Outdoors it changes the grip underfoot as well, so the two get decided together.

Cream — a light cut that barely opens the surface, leaving mostly cement with a hint of sand. The smoothest of the three, and the one we'd steer you away from for a pool deck or a sloped driveway unless the sealer is doing the grip work.

Salt and pepper — ground through to the fine aggregate for an even speckle. The most commonly chosen finish outdoors, and a sensible default when we don't yet know how the slab was poured.

Full exposure — cut deeper again to bring up the larger stone. The boldest look and the most texture underfoot, though it depends on the aggregate sitting close enough to the surface to reach.

We'll tell you what's realistic on your slab before you settle on a look. On a new pour, talk to us before the concrete goes down — the mix and how it's floated decide what exposure is available later.

How the job runs

Step 1

Site assessment

We look at slab age, condition, aggregate type and any existing coating, then talk through exposure level and sealer.

Step 2

Grinding

The surface is cut back in stages with progressively finer diamonds until we reach the specified exposure and finish.

Step 3

Repairs and densifying

Cracks and pinholes are filled to match, and a densifier goes in to harden the surface and reduce porosity.

Step 4

Sealing

A penetrating or topical sealer depending on where the surface is and what it needs to resist.

Step 5

Handover

Surface cleaned and handed over, with a rundown on curing time and how to maintain it.

Compliance

Honed concrete or exposed aggregate?

These get confused constantly, even though they're made in completely different ways.

Exposed aggregate is decided at the pour. A retarder goes onto the wet concrete and the cement layer is washed off the following day, leaving the stones standing proud. The result is heavily textured and grippy, but coarse underfoot — fine in a driveway, less comfortable around a pool or anywhere people walk barefoot. Once it's poured, that's the surface you have.

Honed concrete is ground back after the slab has cured. The stones are cut flat rather than left protruding, so the surface is smooth and even underfoot while still showing the aggregate. It can be done on a new slab or an existing one, and the exposure level is chosen at the time rather than locked in at the pour.

Already have exposed aggregate? It can be honed back. Grinding the tops of the stones flat keeps the look but takes the harshness out of the surface — a common fix for pool surrounds and alfresco areas that turned out rougher underfoot than expected.

What is honed concrete?

Concrete ground back to expose the aggregate and then sealed, finishing at a matte surface with no gloss. It's the outdoor equivalent of polished concrete — same process, specified for weather and traffic rather than an interior floor.

What's the difference between honed and polished concrete?

Where it goes. Honed is for outdoor surfaces — driveways, patios, pool decks, walkways. Polished is for interior floors. Honed stops short of a gloss finish because a polished surface outdoors becomes slippery in the wet and doesn't cope with UV and thermal movement.

How much does honed concrete cost?

Is honed concrete slippery around a pool?

Less so than most sealed surfaces. The matte finish and exposed aggregate give texture a gloss surface doesn't, and exposure can be adjusted where more grip is needed. Where a figure is required, the finished surface can be slip tested to AS 4663 and given a P classification.

Can an existing driveway or patio be honed?

Usually yes, provided the slab is sound and the aggregate sits close enough to the surface for the exposure you want. Honing an existing slab is often a good alternative to replacing it. We assess that before quoting.

How do I choose an aggregate exposure level?

Cream is the lightest cut, salt and pepper the most commonly chosen outdoors, and full exposure the boldest. Outdoors the choice affects grip as well as appearance, so we work through both together. What's achievable depends on how your slab was poured.

Does honed concrete need sealing, and how often?

Yes. A sealer keeps out staining and moisture. Reapplication depends on the sealer and the traffic.
